Chapter 13

Harmonized Within the Same Gospel

Variants 20- 38

In this part, we show the harmonized verses in the KJV, but in the counterpart verse in the NRSV, some phrases or words are missing. They are apparently copied from verses within the same Gospel in KJV. The concise NRSV form is represented by (a). The harmonized verse is represented by (b), and (c) represents the source verse that phrases and words in verse (b) are copied from.

   25. a) Mark 10:21 (NRSV): {A} 4th edition

Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."

       b) Mark 10:21 (KJV):

Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross! and follow me.

       c) Mark 8:34 (NRSV):

He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."

A story similar to the story of the rich young man in Mark 10:21 appears in the Gospels of Matthew 19:21 and Luke 18:22, but neither verses include the phrase "take up his cross".

  38. a) 1 John 5:13 (NRSV):

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

      b) 1 John 5:13 (KJV):

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

The phrase "believe on the name of the Son of God" was repeated within the verse.
